Nestled in the heart of Bali, Ubud stands as a cultural hub that beckons travelers with its blend of natural beauty and rich traditions. Known for its monkey forest, lush rice terraces and thriving arts scene, Ubud is a haven for those seeking both tranquility and adventure. My guide to Ubud will introduce you to the must-see attractions, including luxurious stays at Tanadewa Ubud and delightful dining at Warung Siam and Sun Sun Warung. Whether you’re planning your first trip to Bali or looking for insider tips for your next holiday, this guide for Ubud first-timers will set you off on the right foot.
Ubud is a town in the uplands of Bali, Indonesia, approximately a ninety-minute drive from Denpasar (DPS) International Airport depending on the traffic. It is most well-known for the Ubud Monkey Forest and the rice terraces and paddies that you can find just about everywhere. Ubud is also known as a hotspot for traditional arts, crafts, and dance. It’s no secret that it’s my favourite area of Bali, and I’d like to share why I can’t seem to stop going back.
The emerald-green rice terraces of Ubud are a quintessential part of any day tour. These stunning landscapes not only provide breathtaking views but also offer insight into Bali’s ancient agricultural practices.
Tegalalang Rice Terrace, just north of Ubud, is a must-visit UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can witness the Subak irrigation system, a traditional method that’s been used for centuries.
For the best experience, visit early in the morning when the light is soft and the air is cool (though sunset it a popular time to visit, too). Don’t forget to support local farmers by purchasing refreshments or handicrafts from their stalls!
Ubud’s reputation as an artistic haven is well-deserved, with numerous galleries showcasing both traditional and contemporary Balinese art. This vibrant art scene is one of the things I wish I knew to expect before my first trip so I could’ve appreciated it even more, but it was a wonderful surprise nonetheless.
Start your artistic journey at the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA), which houses an impressive collection of Balinese, Indonesian, and foreign artists’ works. The museum also offers cultural workshops, and your entrance fee (approx $15AUD) also supports ARMA’s cultural preservation work.
For textiles, clothing and home decor, visit Threads of Life. This fair-trade gallery works directly with over 1200 women weavers and supports the development of more than 35 weavers’ groups on 12 Indonesian islands.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit smaller, family-run galleries scattered throughout Ubud. These often provide a more intimate look at local art and the chance to meet artists in person.
No Bali holiday is complete without seeing a traditional dance performance. Ubud offers numerous opportunities to experience these shows that bring ancient stories to life through intricate movements and elaborate costumes.
The Ubud Palace hosts nightly performances of various traditional dances, including the famous Legong dance. Arrive early to get a good spot!
For a more unique experience, consider attending a Kecak fire dance at Pura Dalem Taman Kaja. This captivating performance, set against the backdrop of a temple at sunset, tells the story of the Ramayana epic.
Remember to respect local customs and refrain from flash photography during performances!
For travelers seeking a luxurious retreat in nature, Tanadewa Resort offers the perfect blend of tranquility and opulence. Set against Ubud’s lush landscapes, this resort provides an idyllic escape combining modern amenities and traditional Balinese architecture. The resort sits far enough from the hustle-and-bustle that you feel worlds away, but the complimentary resort shuttles will get you back into the center of town in no time.
Guests can indulge in villas equipped with deep bathtubs and private pools, or enjoy a drink at the resort’s infinity pool. Tanaspa offers rejuvenating treatments inspired by Balinese healing traditions, ensuring a restful and revitalizing stay. Tanarasa Restaurant serves up incredible Balinese meals at brilliant prices, and if you can’t decide whether to go for a swim or have breakfast first, you can combine the two and enjoy a floating breakfast (either in your villa’s private pool or in the infinity pool).
Psst: get in touch for an exclusive package rate – imagine daily breakfast (a la carte and buffet-style), 15% off your Tanarasa Restaurant and Tanaspa bills, and a complimentary 60-minute massage for two adults all included in the cost of your accommodation!
A visit to Ubud wouldn’t be complete without a meal at Sun Sun Warung, a walk-in-only eatery that captures the essence of Balinese dining. Known for its warm hospitality and traditional ambiance, at Sun Sun Warung guests can enjoy a variety of dishes prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, ensuring an authentic taste of Bali. From the spicy sambal to the flavorful nasi goreng, each dish is crafted with love and attention, bringing the vibrant tastes of the island to the table.
Family owned and operated Sun Sun Warung is situated within a family compound, providing a homey setting where diners can soak in the atmosphere that Ubud is famous for. Whether you’re a foodie looking to explore new flavors or simply in search of a cozy meal spot, Sun Sun Warung promises a memorable dining experience that captures the heart and soul of Bali – and at incredibly affordable prices!
Warung Siam is a culinary gem nestled in the vibrant streets of Ubud, and one of my all-time favourites. Offering a unique fusion of Thai and Indonesian flavors, this quaint eatery provides a refreshing twist to the local dining scene.
At Warung Siam guests are treated to a diverse menu that features classic Thai dishes infused with the rich spices and ingredients of Indonesian cuisine. Whether you choose a fragrant green curry or a traditional Thai papaya salad, you’re in for a treat; each dish is meticulously prepared to highlight the vibrant tastes of both cultures. The warm and attentive service adds to the inviting ambiance, making it an ideal spot for both quick, casual meals and long dinners.
I’m not the only one obsessed with Warung Siam, so be prepared to wait a few minutes for a table. Believe me, it’s worth the wait, and service is so fast that you won’t usually be waiting long anyway!
I hope I’ve convinced you to add Ubud to your next Bali trip, and to really take your time and explore properly! I could go on for hours about countless other things to do and places to stay in the area (this is just the tip of the iceberg!) but I think everyone should get over there and experience it for themselves. Keep me in mind for your next Bali holiday – I’d love to give you a few more tips and tricks!
